About Avielle

1. What’s your name, major, and year?

My name is Avielle Sotomayor, and I am a sophomore majoring in Music Instrumental and Financial Planning.

2. What programs have you volunteered for with Across Generations?

 Last semester I volunteered in the music program with Across Generations.

3. What’s your favorite part about volunteering with the elderly?

My favorite part about volunteering with the elderly is getting to talk with them and bring them entertainment while sharing the love of Jesus.

4. Describe one interaction you’ve had with a senior. What did you have in common? What were you surprised about?

At our concert at McGurk house this May, I spoke with a woman who was also a Christian. I was surprised by her joy and peace in spite of her struggle with loneliness. Her husband had passed away many years ago and she didn’t get to see her son very often, but when she spoke to me I could sense so much patience and joy in her spirit.

5. Why did you want to volunteer with Across Generations?

I wanted to volunteer with Across Generations because it seemed like a very meaningful ministry. I wanted to participate in a program where I could use my musical abilities to show people the love of God, and Across Generations enabled me to do that.

6. What have you learned by interacting with the elderly? Has your faith been impacted in any way? Please explain.

I have learned that many of them struggle with loneliness. My faith has been impacted by watching how the Christian woman with whom I spoke was able to overcome that because of her trust in Jesus.

7. Is there anything else you feel is important to share?

I love how Across Generations reaches out to a category of people who are often neglected but who need the truth of the Gospel more desperately than any other age group. This ministry uses so many different ways of sharing God’s love with the elderly!
